Bopomofo, also known as Zhuyin, was introduced in the 1910s as the first official phonetic system for transcribing mandarin Chinese. Despite being superseded in mainland China by the Pinyin system, Bopomofo is still the predominant phonetic system in teaching reading and writing in elementary schools in Taiwan. It is also one of the most popular ways to enter Chinese characters into computers and look up characters in a dictionary in Taiwan. Instead of using Pinyin, some oversea Chinese teachers prefer using bopomofo for teaching and annotating the pronunciation of Mandarin Chinese.
